Queensland women make a significant contribution to our families, communities and economy. When women are economically secure, the benefits extend across generations and strengthen Queensland as a whole.

While progress has been made, many women continue to face barriers that affect their financial wellbeing and economic opportunities throughout their lives.

  • Financial knowledge

The gender financial knowledge gap has increased—women scored 7.4% lower in financial capability in 2018 and 8.9% lower in 2022.

  • Gender pay gap

There is a 10.7% gender pay gap on average in a full-time working week.

  • Medium super balance

Women currently retire with a median super balance around 25% lower than men the same age.

Developed with Queensland women

To inform Queensland's first Women's Economic Security Strategy, the Queensland Government engaged with more than 3,000 women across the state.

Government can create the right conditions, remove barriers within its power, and invest where the impact is greatest. What women do, though, is key—making choices, building skills, taking opportunities, and creating outcomes that strengthen their own lives and Queensland's economy alongside them.

Our vision

The Women's Economic Security Strategy sets the direction for improving economic outcomes for Queensland women and creating the conditions for greater financial security.

It outlines key priorities to:

  • support women's workforce participation and career progression
  • strengthen financial wellbeing and independence
  • address barriers that limit economic opportunities
  • improve outcomes for women in different life circumstances
  • foster partnerships across government, industry and the community.

Building a more secure future

Our bold vision is a Queensland where every woman has the opportunity to thrive and where each person, family and community has the freedom to build financial security on their own terms.
