Current job title:

Qualifications

Past experience

How did you get started?

My husband’s cousin suggested I take an apprenticeship as a Painter and Decorator (I was 36 years old).

Greatest professional achievement

Completing my apprenticeship in Denmark, in a foreign language.

Challenges the job presents

Physically challenging, lifting heavy tins of paint, ladders, etc.

What you like most about your job

It is enormously satisfying to see a home rejuvenated with a new coat of paint and new colours.

Typical day at work

Up a ladder painting ceilings, walls, architraves, or all of the above. I have freedom to work my own hours fitting in with children and school. I love the variety of my work and I am rarely in the same place for long before moving on to a new job and new clients.

Advice for other women

You are never too old to take the challenge of taking a new career path, be it secretarial or a trade. Any woman, any girl, can move into any area of work. Sure it may prove difficult sometimes, but the satisfaction of finally doing something in your workday will prove to be worth the financial and freedom sacrifices made during a training period. Life is too short to be living eight hours a day in a job we are not happy with. The trades have a hole needing filling, in all areas. But remember, just because a female takes a trade it doesn’t mean losing our femininity. Being a woman in a man’s work territory is unique, we should embrace our femininity and bring balance into an otherwise testosterone run workplace. Life is for living, so, GO GET THEM GIRLS!
