Townsville (Correction Centre Upgrade Projects)
Current job title:
Buildings Foreperson (Electrical)

Qualifications

Electrical Fitter/Mechanic (Electrician)

Past experience

Eight years in electrical industry, five years in administration.

How did you get started?

Having worked in admin for a while, I felt that a change was needed and to take on a new and challenging path away from an office and a stereotypical female workplace - I didn't know anything about the electrical industry - so I rang the local Electrical Contractor and enquired about an apprenticeship. Two weeks later I commenced as an Electrical Apprentice. I was employed as an adult apprentice (as I was over 21) and it was one of the best decisions that I have made. This was a whole new world, and despite that it was a male dominated industry, I was accepted and have met most of my dearest friends here, especially since working in Construction.

Greatest professional achievement

Being accepted and supported by my peers in achieving a challenging supervisory role.

Challenges the job presents

Working in a live Male Prison - redeveloping, upgrading and co-ordinating activities in an operating Correctional Facility. Co ordination and liaison between trades/Principle Contractor/Corrections Officers during construction and redevelopment to align with set programs and meeting deadlines.

What you like most about your job

The diversity. The electrical industry is multi-faceted and I find that I am continually learning - it's awesome.

Typical day at work

Sign in and comply with security requirements, delegate work, ensure that we don't run out of stock to maintain continuity of work, supply support and information for both workers and management, onsite supervision and guidance, participate in maintaining a safe working environment for my colleagues and ensuring that safe work practices are complied with, assisting in providing a team focused environment.

Advice for other women

Don't be intimidated by any industry, just bring your positive attitude and your confidence will follow. You will succeed with the support of your peers and guidance provided by veterans in your chosen career.
