Name:
Mariska Chadwick
Age:
21
Location:
Brisbane
Current job title:
Electrician

Qualifications

Certificate III - Electrical Fitter/Mechanic.

Past experience

Four-year apprenticeship.

How did you get started?

I tried a trade in my school holidays and I was offered a job while I was there.

Greatest professional achievement

I've been nominated for Apprentice of the Year. I have completed two months of electrical estimating.

Challenges the job presents

The job is physically challenging for some. Occasional discrimination due to the trade being male-dominated, which is changing and generally is not a problem.

What you like most about your job

The variety of work that electricians have to choose from. The different places you can work - from air-conditioned offices to factories, mines, shopping centres and high-rises. Also, after I've wired something up, turning it on and seeing it working!

Typical day at work

Start at 6.30am. Get tools out for the day. Run in some cables. Have smoko and a chat. Fit and test some lights, and then home at 2.30pm.

Advice for other women

Always do what you want to do no matter how different it may be to what's expected of you. Never give up, 'cause it's worth it in the end. I am a very girly girl and can also be sporty, but am good at the trade work. You don't have to fit into a category!
