How did you get started?

By obtaining a scholarship to do a PhD and thereafter seeking a career in an industry which resulted in my employment with Unilever.

Greatest professional achievement

Designing a novel soil release polymer for detergent formulations which was subsequently scaled up and commercialised; and successfully prosecuting a patent infringement case in India.

Challenges the job presents

A wide breadth of technical knowledge is required, and immense attention to detail is required without losing the bigger picture.

What you like most about your job

That it is varied and challenging. No two days are ever the same.

Typical day at work

I usually start off by checking any overnight communication that is then filed and diarised by my secretary. If there is anything that requires immediate action, I attend to it. If not, my secretary and I go through my dairy and decide which items require action.

The mix of items varies. Sometimes they are routine tasks; sometimes a single task can take up the whole day. Most tasks relate to routine patent management with the more complex tasks being by way of legal advice. Towards the end of the day I also set aside some time for supervision or marketing, i.e., non-income generating work.
