How did you get started?
I attended the National Youth Science Forum and met someone who did mining engineering. She told me how it combined the communication side of work with the technical side. I had thought at this stage engineering would be a great career, as it offered lots of options. narrowed down a few options such as mining, mechanical, environmental and civil. I applied for scholarships in Sydney in the abovementioned disciplines and got an interview with UNSW Coop program, which included a two day tour, to a couple of mines in NSW. It was a great experience and really helped me make up my mind about what I would like to study. Mining also, had the appeal of a great career, with lots of opportunities.
Greatest professional achievement
No matter how cliché statements like ‘sticking it out in the men's world’ are, I do feel that not only have I stuck it out in a men's world, but also I have earned respect of the guys and can lead myself quite professionally.
Challenges the job presents
Long days, swapping sleeping patterns around. The extra bit of effort outside of job scope is always expected, and sometimes women might have to work twice as hard to prove themselves. But in other cases women are better at persuading people and can use their feminine powers.
What you like most about your job
Interactive, challenging, swap roles on a regular basis. Relaxing, not having to worry what to wear to work, just put on the oranges and grab your hard hat and belt.
Typical day at work
Get up 4.00am or 4.30am, get to work run daily figures, sort out the daily schedule, i.e. which drill is going where for the day, ensure all priority jobs are covered, not too many interactions and everything is done the safest way.
Advice for other women
Don't let the guys scare you off, women can do more things at once naturally, so you will always have that over men! Don't be intimidated, there are enough women in the industry now that the individual style of women undertaking business has proved beneficial for numerous businesses and companies in the resource sector.
