Qualifications

Past experience

How did you get started?

I decided I didn't want to work full time in an office tied to my desk (as per my previous employment in accounting). I worked through a careers book from A to Z and pulled out any course/career that interested me. All of my interests lead to working in the environment. I then looked at qualifications required for this field and discovered a new course being offered in Environmental Management. This course not only enhanced my knowledge in this area, but also my passion, which continues today.

Greatest professional achievement

Having my research project published in a field naturalist journal, as the results refuted all previous assumptions based on the suppression mechanisms of an invasive weed species in bushland in Victoria.

Also, the scholarship I won to research dolphins, which lead to a continuing partnership for 10 years, and more currently, the bursary I was awarded by Zonta Club of Noosa, to help continue with my existing studies.

Challenges the job presents

Keeping up with the latest developments in science. A lot of reading and research is required, aside from everyday work commitments.

What you like most about your job

The intellectual capacity, being at the forefront of new science and the interaction with amazing and inspiring people.

Typical day at work

Contributing to reports and projects on topics such as: water recycling; climate change modelling; adaptive capacities of industries; and risk assessments for climatic change.

Also, I am currently doing work with CLIM systems in New Zealand, furthering my training on climate modelling and assessments, as well as developing new software systems for specific target industries.

Advice for other women

To develop a feel for your area of interest, and try to gather information and learn about options from: career counsellors; career centres; and institutes for higher education. Look for work experience in related industries. And remember, it is never too late to realise what it is you want to do - AND you CAN achieve whatever your heart desires.
