Employers and group training companies
'Welfare to Work' initiative helps Cairns women to find work in construction - Ten Indigenous women from Cairns have taken part in a Construction Skills Queensland initiative that helps those in the Indigenous community to find employment. Welfare to Work has assisted these women in attaining a Certificate I in General Construction and a Certificate in Skid Steer Operation through the Careers Australia Institute of Training. Downs Group Training is a company to facilitate traineeship and apprenticeships on the Darling Downs.
Rio Tinto Coal Australia - Hail Creek Mine: The Equal Opportunity for Women in the Workplace Agency presented the Hail Creek Mine with a Business Achievement Award for "Outstanding Equal Employment Opportunity Practice for the Advancement of Women in a Non-Traditional Area/Role". The Mackay Whitsunday Regional Economic Development Corporation (REDC) website provides a wealth of information about the region including REDC's Regional Economic Reports and Local Government Area (LGA) Shire Profiles.
Mackay Area Industry Network (MAIN) is an Industry Association representing a wide range of mining, mining services, engineering and construction companies in the Mackay region of Queensland. The MAIN Care© Program is dedicated to increasing the number of skilled tradespeople in the region through services that include prevocational training programmes and a number of school based training initiatives.
MRAEL is one of two group training companies operating in the Mackay/Whitsunday region. It employs over 600 apprentices & trainees and over 50 staff, with a corporate office and other facilities in Mackay, and regional offices at Emerald, Dysart, Rockhampton and Whitsunday. MRAEL also hosts Apprentice Careers and Employment - the region's Australian Apprenticeships Centre (AAC).
TORGAS is the other group training company with an office in Mackay. TORGAS currently employs over 450 apprentices and trainees in a number of different vocations including engineering, automotive and construction.
Mackay Information Technology Network (MITN) is a non-profit industry network committed providing a strong and sustainable regional ICT industry that will create jobs and attract investment into the area.
TAFE, university programs and scholarships
The Bremer Institute of TAFE has campuses in the western suburbs of Brisbane.
The Central Queensland Institute of TAFE (CQIT) has a campus in Mackay.
Central Queensland University offers Women into Science and Technology (WIST). This is a home-based, self-paced bridging course in English, Science, Mathematics and Computing especially designed and programmed for women.
Central Queensland University - Scholarships - A number of scholarships are available to support MCSET related studies sat the Central Queensland University (CQU) Mackay Campus. These include the Hail Creek Mine CQU Scholarships to help counter the skills shortage in the Mackay area. FNQ women help strengthen the construction industry - In her second year at Tropical North Queensland TAFE in Cairns, Sharna Russell is part of a growing number of women in the construction industry that could help cut Far North Queensland's shortage in tradespeople.
Tropical North Queensland Institute of TAFE taps into female talent - A new employment program in Cairns will encourage more women to embark on careers in plumbing.
The University of Southern Queensland will, in 2009, offer one Zonta Club of West Moreton Area Women in Engineering Scholarship to an undergraduate student entering their second year of full-time on campus study in Engineering at USQ Springfield.
School programs
The Queensland Minerals and Energy Academy (QMEA) provides students with clear pathways into one of the state's most innovative and economically important sectors. The initiative involves three hubs, including one based at the Moranbah State High School, with links to gateway' high schools to develop and promote curriculum structures and enable students to access a broad range of minerals and energy related learning and career opportunities.
Science on Saturday (CSIRO) is a fun and exciting Queensland Government program giving Queensland school students from 7 to 14 years old an opportunity to participate in real, hands-on science experiments.
Skills Centres
The Coalfields Engineering Skills Centre, located at the Moranbah High School, is being established for mining and engineering firms, TAFE and registered training organisations to provide pre-vocational and vocational training for mine workers in the region. (Note the centre will commence operating very soon but does not yet have a website. The contact is Kelly Crispin at the Moranbah High School - 0418 753 677).
The Mining Industry Skills Centre is a not for profit organisation, formed as a collaborative venture between the mining industry and government, to establish a centre of excellence for the development and implementation of training initiatives in the industry. The Centre is committed to developing and implementing strategic initiatives that will assist the mining industry in creating a sustainable workforce.
The Cairns Aviation Skills Centre has published three brochures on aviation engineering careers targeting women changing careers, young women and Indigenous women.
