Women into Local Government

In Queensland only 30% of all elected councillors and 15% of mayors are women.

Women bring a unique perspective and a high level of skills and expertise to local government while also having a great sense of what's going on in the community.

The experience women gain in local government can stand them in good stead for ongoing career development and further leadership roles.

However, many factors influence women's choice about participating in this form of community leadership - attitudes, personal characteristics, finances, and competing responsibilities.

There are several publications and web resources which may help you to find out more about running for local council.
