Confident, Safe & Secure Living in Queensland - A Handbook on Safety for Seniors
The Safety for Seniors handbook, produced by the Queensland Police Service, provides seniors with practical information and handy hints on personal and property security and will assist seniors to live life to the full and, most importantly, without fear.
Building Safer Communities
In 1999, the Queensland Government developed and delivered a crime prevention strategy, Building Safer Communities. The strategy aims to encourage government departments, agencies and business and community groups to work together to promote safer public and private spaces for everyone. The Queensland Government has committed to a number of programs as part of Building Safer Communities which enhance the safety of older women, including:
- Increased funding for statewide services to respond to abuse of older people through the Elder Abuse Prevention Unit (EAPU) (Non-Queensland Government website). As part of the EAPU, a helpline, open Monday to Friday, 9am to 5pm, is a confidential support, information and referral service for people who have experienced or witnessed elder abuse. Phone 1300 651 192.
- Funding for the Home Assist Secure Program.
- Continued funding and support for Safe and Confident Living Projects.
- Action for safer public spaces.
- Improved public transport timetables and integration of transport services.
- Improvement of safety in the public rail network through funding for the Safe Station Program, installation of Closed Circuit Television monitoring and emergency telephones at all Citytrain stations, improved lighting and access, and increases in Rail Police programs.
