Housing assistance

Following the recent State Election and Machinery of Government changes, the former Department of Housing, now Housing and Homelessness Services, is an important part of the Department of Communities, under the Government's key priority area of Social Development.

Housing and Homelessness Services provides a number of services for people who need assistance with modifying or modified housing including:

Residential aged care

The Queensland Department of Communities supports residential aged care through the Home and Community Care Program (HACC) which funds maintenance and support services to help frail elderly and disabled younger people live independently in their own homes and the community.

In February 2006, the Department of Communities released the HACC Multicultural Service Development Strategy and posts on its website a number of multicultural facts sheets and audios in English, Arabic, Bosnian, Chinese, Dutch, Filipino, German, Greek, Hungarian, Italian, Polish, Serbian, Samoan, Spanish and Vietnamese. It also has an Indigenous HACC Program and supports culturally appropriate care and services for frail Indigenous elders and younger people with a disability.

The Islamic Women's Association provides bilingual and faith-specific Community Aged Care Packages (CACP) and Extended Aged Care at Home Packages for Muslim Queenslanders. It also recently opened the Salam Community Respite Centre to provide 'cottage care' - overnight, emergency or day care - to provide relief for carers. Contact (07) 3272 8545 or email iwaq@iinet.au.
